Abstract

Fatigue failure of an asphalt layer is one of the primary structural distress modes found in flexible pavements, resulting from the repeated application of traffic-induced stress. It is often exhibited as 'crocodile' cracking on the road surface. Various laboratory fatigue testing methods are used to characterize the fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures, but a more advance method had been developed and the application to large aggregate mixes for bases (LAMBS) was discussed. The third-point loading fatigue testing method, specially modified, had been incorporated. This fatigue performance of LAMBS mixture containing a nominal aggregate size of 37, 5mm. The LAMBS mixture had been found to have a superior fatigue performance compared with a conventional continuously graded mixture with a 19mm nominal aggregate size.
