Transmission length equations found in SABS 0100 restrict the concrete strength at release to 35 Mpa and assume that the pre-stressing force is gradually released. It is common practice in South Africa to release the pre-stressing force when the concrete strength is less than the minimum code specification. In addition, may of the release systems will shock load the concrete. Both of these factors will increase the transmission length beyond the code prediction. To overcome these problems, a new formulation is presented based on energy loss principles. The proposed theorem is versatile, simple and applicable to the majority of pre-stressing systems. Compared with experimental results, the transmission length was estimated within 10 per cent of the actual length.
