The paper describes the basic principles of electro-osmosis in partially saturated clay. A theoretical model is derived for the effect of electro-osmosis on the rate of infiltration of water into a horizontal clay column. Results of laboratory experiments for the determination of the relevant transport coefficients for compacted partially saturated clay are discussed and used to verify the accuracy of the model at different degrees of saturation. With the model proven to be satisfactory, it is demonstrated how electro-osmosis will increase the rate of infiltration for different combinations of initial water content of the clay and electric current density in the column. It is concluded that the phenomenon of electro-osmosis may be utilized on sites where the water content of volumes of clay soil has to be increased artificially.
