The marine environment provides an uncompromising test of the durability of concrete and deterioration may occur rapidly unless structures are well designed and built. The durability performance of more than 30 marine concrete structures was assessed along the Cape coast and general observations are made about carbonation, chloride ingress, corrosion of reinforcement and durability specifications. Findings from this survey suggest that many structures lack durability owing to inadequate specifications and pool site practice. Durability of reinforced concrete structures can be enhanced by using chloride-resistant concrete, sufficient cover to the reinforcement and ensuring good site practice. Recommendations are made for improving durability specifications to produce rational designs where satisfactory compliance can be guaranteed during construction.
