Radiation screening with concrete made of heavy aggregates is a popular method of shielding radiation sources. Heavy aggregates require a number of special measures to be used on site. This paper proposes a precast heavy masonry alternative to in situ heavy concrete. Southern Africa is rich in potentially suitable heavy aggregates that could be obtained from mines. Recent pioneering research into potential heavy aggregates is reviewed and a proposal for the development of a remotely sited industry to manufacture specially designed interlocking heavy masonry units to serve as radiation screening is made. The concept of suitable interlocking masonry for radiation screening is discussed and a suitable design is introduced.
