It is increasingly important in plastic analysis of structures to assess the required plastic hinge rotations implicit in ensuring a ductile mode of failure. The displacements of a frame at the offset op plastic collapse also provide a useful limit in second-order, inelastic, stability analysis. A method is described for systematically applying the principle of virtual work to the calculation of notional plastic hinge rotations and deflections during the development of a collapse mechanism. Approaches to combining independent mechanisms of collapse, assessing the first and last hinges to form and calculating indeterminate moments in partial collapse mechanisms are also described based on flexibility-based analysis.
