The design yield of a dam or system of dams is primarily dependent on the mean annual run-off (MAR), the coefficient of variation (CV) of the annual run-off and the number of failures that can be tolerated over the lief of the project (a failure being defined as a year when the project is unable to supply the full design yield). The overall benefit from the scheme can be maximize in terms of the hydrological and economic parameters to produce an optimum yield. The probability distributions of the MAR and CV can be calculated and the design yield at a particular failure rate revised to give an assurance that this number of failures will not be exceeded during the economic lifetime of the project.
