Abstract

Rapid urbanization is forcing the engineer to seek urgent supplementation of water supplies. The alternatives of laying larger pipes, duplicating lines or boosting through older lines are compared. It is shown that boosting is generally economically attractive, especially through large scale pipelines. This paper looks at the economic considerations involved in increasing flow through an existing gravity pipeline with a booster pump. The same theory is used to look at upgrading pumping pipelines as opposed to duplicating them as demands increase.
