Abstract

This paper describes a case history of shallow failures of some of 31 road embankments on the Wyllies Poort-Sibasa road in Venda. The authors have been involved in an extensive investigation of the failures and have concluded that the mechanism may be described as surficial sloughing associated with prolonged precipitation and poor compaction of the embankment flanks. Surficial sloughing is relatively common in Hong Kong and on the west coast of the United States where rainfall is as high as in Venda, exceeding 2 500 mm per annum. In South Africa, although a number of case histories of surficial sloughing have been reported, this particular mechanism has not been recognized and is not covered in the guideline literature. The authors therefore conclude by recommending that THR10 and other guideline literature be revised to provide for checks against surficial instability. Tentative recommendations based on checking shallow slips in saturated material up to a depth of 1,2 m in areas where rainfall exceeds 1 000 mm per annum are made.

Die skrywers was betrokke by intensiewe ondersoek na die swigtingspatroon, en het tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat die vlak swigtings toegeskryf kan word aan langdurige reenvalneerslae en swam kompaksie van die hellingsvlakke van die opvullings. Hierdie soort swigting kom meer algemeen voor in gebiede van hoe reenval, soos Hong Kong en die weskus van Noord-America.
