Abstract

The process of castellating rolled sections has featured in steel construction for over eight decades, but despite this long-term usage and an extensive body of literature little exists in the way of firm design recommendations. This paper outlines the development of castellated beams and reviews the various techniques that have been proposed for their analysis. Recommendations are made regarding those methods that lead to safe but economical design, and the relevant procedures are dealt with. A bibliography is provided of all published work on castellated beams known to the author.
