Abstract

Design procedures for concrete pavements used in South Africa cater only for high traffic volumes. Thin-slab concrete pavements have been used effectively in Europe for low volume roads. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of the properties of the subbase layer on the performance of thin concrete slabs. It was found that 150 mm thick slabs are structurally adequate for traffic up to five million E80s, provided that the subbase is erosion-resistant and sufficiently thick (200 mm) to protect the subgrade from pumping. Subbase quality is less important. The ability of the subbase layer to drain excess water is also beneficial.

Daar is gevind dat 150 mm-dik blaaie struktureel voldoende is vir tot vyf miljoen E80s indien die stutlaag erosiebestand en dik genoeg (200 mm) is om die grondlaag teen pomping te beskerm. Stutlaagkwaliteit is minder belangrik. Die vermoe van die stutlaag om maklik te dreineer is ook voordelig.
