Abstract

Structural steel frames act very differently from the way in which a designer may expect. To be able to predict the actual behaviour of steel frames it is important to consider factors such as material, geometrical and connection non-linearities in the analysis procedures. Structural analysis by computer has become common practice by engineers. A method often used for this is the matrix stiffness method. The normal matrix stiffness method, however, makes provision only for the analysis of members of which the member ends are either rigidly connected or hinged. Lui and Chen (1987) described a procedure to adapt the normal matrix stiffness method to incorporate semi-rigid end connections at both ends of a member. In this paper this procedure is further extended to incorporate any combination of member end connection conditions, ie fully fixed, semi-rigid and hinged.

Die gedrag van strukturele staalraamwerke is heelwat anders as wat die alledaagse ontwerpingenieur mag dink. Ten einde die werklike gedrag van sulke raamwerke akkuraat te kan voorspel, is dit nodig dat faktore soos materiaal-, geometriese en verbindings-nie-lineariteite in die analise van staalraamwerke in ag geneem word. Die analise van raamstrukture met behulp van rekenaars kom deesdae algemeen voor onder ontwerpingenieurs. 'n Metode wat algemeen vir hierdie doel gebruik word, is die matriksstyfheidsmetode. Die gewone matriksstyfheidsmetode maak egter slegs voorsiening vir die analise van raamwerke waarvan die entverbindings van die elemente of volkome star of geskarnierd is. Lui en Chen (1987) het 'n prosedure beskryf waar die matriksstyfheidsmetode aangepas is om elemente waarvan beide ente semi-star verbind is, te analiseer. In hierdie referaat word metodes beskryf waarvolgens die matriksstyfheidsmetode verder aangepas kan word ten einde voorsiening te maak vir elemente met enige kombinasie van entverbindings, te wete star, semi-star of geskarnierd.
