Tornadoes are the most violent windstorms on earth, and while they are regarded as relatively rare events in Southern Africa several large tornadoes have occurred in South Africa's recent history. An analysis of tornado activity in South Africa was presented in this paper, together with a tornado risk model applicable to South African conditions. This model is applicable in those cases in which the largest dimension of the building or structure is of the same order of magnitude, or smaller, than the path width of the tornado.
