A real-time computer model of catchment runoff is operated on-line with a Scada program for operation of a hydro-electric station in Transkei. Data from 11 rain gauges are telemetered to a central processing unit and led into a PC. The Scada system logs the data and a Pascal model reads the data from files and estimates stream flow up to two days in advance. Variables that can be changed on a control screen include anticipated rainfall and preceding river flow rate as well as catchment characteristics. The simultaneous functioning of the various computer activities is possible on a PC as well as by manual intervention for prediction purposes. A kinematic model with both surface and groundwater flow components was used for the simulation. Continuous simulation occurs and rain data are stored for 60 previous hours. Start-up is equally possible by setting the correct soil moisture conditions prior to the current storm.
