Abstract

A study has been made of moisture conditions within landfills situated in the summer rainfall area of the South African Highveld. As part of the study, a series of sprinkler infiltrometer tests was carried out, which showed that very little runoff of moisture occurs from landfills under light rainfall. Sampling of landfills has shown no evidence of the escape of significant leachate. This observation has lead to the development of a 'climatic water balance' that is used in the new . Finally, a new program, FLOW, that simulates the movement of moisture through landfills, is introduced and an example of its capabilities is given.
