Abstract

Modern river engineering must reconcile the often conflicting requirements of people and the natural environment. One approach for increasing channel conveyance while preserving in-stream habitats is the creation of a compound or two-stage cross-section. The conveyance and boundary shear stresses in straight and meandering compound channels can be estimated using new empirical procedures.
