Abstract

The design and construction of a single-span, skew-deck, portal frame bridge is described, which was formed and cast adjacent to a very busy railway embankment, while foundations were prepared in eight shafts that were sunk through the embankment, without interruption to rail traffic. The structure was subsequently launched into place in an operation lasting 24 hours, during which the rails and power and communication cables were removed and enough of the embankment was excavated to accommodate the bridge, which was then slid over the prepared foundations. This project was noteworthy firstly owing to the utilization of isolated permanent foundation piers constructed in shafts and secondly in the bridge being launched into place without anchor blocks in a continuous operation.
