Abstract

This paper examined the hydrological history of the Braamfontein Spruit, Johannesburg, drawing on information derived from the annual reports of the town / city engineer, along with other archival sources and field mapping. Issues addressed included early development in the Braamfontein Spruit catchment, initial erosion problems along the Braamfontein Spruit, stormwater drainage works and recent incidents of flooding / erosion along this river. The location of public utilities and development of residential stands near to the river have given rise to serious problems. Recent measures to counteract these problems were outlined.
