Abstract

The control of cracking due to thermal stress and the prediction of cooling rates in large concrete structures is of major concern to the design engineer. Without accurate information on the thermal properties of the concrete it is impossible to predict the thermal stress in the concrete. This paper describes laboratory tests developed to determine the heat of hydration and thermal conductivity of concrete samples. The use of these results to predict the temperature profile in a concrete structure and temperature-matched curing strength tests are also discussed.

Die beheer van kraakvorming as gevolg van termiese spanning en die voorspelling van afkoelingstempo's in groot betonstrukture is vir die ontwerpingenieur van aansienlike belang. Sonder akkurate inligting aangaande die termiese eienskappe van beton is dit onmoontlik om voorspellings oor termiese spannings in die beton te maak. Hierdie referaat beskryf laboratoriumtoetse wat ontwikkel is om die hidrasiehitte en termiese geleidingsvermoe van betonmonsters te bepaal. Verder word die aanwending van hierdie resultate om temperatuurprofiele in betonstrukture te voorspel asook tempertuuraangepaste verhardingsterktetoetse bespreek.
