Abstract

Accelerated pavement testing using the model mobile load simulator (MMLS) allows a rapid assessment of the rutting potential of different asphalt mixes under laboratory controlled conditions, whether investigative or comparative testing. The MMLS was used to investigate the effect of variation in binder content on the long-term rutting performance of scaled-down large aggregate asphalt pavements. It was found that the binder content of the pavement had a notable effect on its rutting performance. Pavements constructed at a lower than optimum binder content performed considerably better than those constructed at or above optimum.

Versnelde plaveiseltoetse met die model- mobiele lassimuleerder (MMLS) stel ons in staat om die wielspoorvormingspotensiaal van verskillende asfaltmengsels redelik vinnig onder laboratoriumbeheerde toestande te bepaal. Dit is gebruik om die invloed van variasie in bindmiddelinhoud op die langtermyngedrag van afgeskaalde asfaltplaveisels met groot aggregaat te ondersoek. Daar is bevind dat die bindmiddelinhoud van 'n plaveisel die sporingsgedrag beduidend beinvloed. Die plaveisel wat by laer as optimum bindmiddelinhoud gekompakteer is, het heelwat beter presteer as die plaveisels by of hoer as optimum bindmiddelinhoud.
