Abstract

Arches have been used for bridging for at least 4 000 years. However, for many centuries they were built by trial and error because their complex behaviour was not understood. Properly designed and built, they can support considerable loads. This paper summarizes the methods that have been developed to analyse masonry arches, including factors to be considered in their design. The failure mechanism and graphical methods of analysis are highlighted
