oa Acta Classica : Proceedings of the Classical Association of South Africa - Keiserdatums in Eutropius

Abstract

The method employed by Eutropius to date the lives and rules of the emperors with whom he deals in his Breviarium ab urbe condita has not yet been studied systematically. In conjunction with this the use which the author has made of his sources also deserves closer scrutiny. The upshot of the investigation presented below is that the data given by Eutropius for the period Nerva to Elagabaius show certain peculiarities, which give rise to the conclusion that he seems to have consulted the biographies of Marius Maximus directly for this period before changing to the so-called Verlorene Kaisergeschichte (Enmann) as his further primary source.
