Abstract

Of all the of his time, P. Ventidius seems to have puzzled the Romans most (Gell. 15.4.1). Thrown up in a period of political and military strife, he was a meteoric figure - springing from nowhere, vanishing again and again to reappear at a higher altitude, then, at his zenith, blinking out for ever.
