Abstract

The role and actions of the fleet of transport aircraft can hardly be exaggerated in the history of the South African Air Force. Not only did they fulfill an indispensable role in the military environment - in the civilian field as well, particularly with regard to search and rescue attempts, the transport aircraft of the South African Air Force (SAAF) were very valuable during this period. The fact that the fleet of transporters has an exceptional safety record is definitely worth mentioning. In the light of the hundreds/thousands of flying hours, particularly of the C130s and C160s - sometimes under the most difficult circumstances - it becomes clear why there is still so much appreciation for these crews and their aircraft.
