South Africa's transition to democracy has been characterised by a sharp increase in crime. This is not a unique trend. Many other countries such as the former Soviet Union are experiencing the same tendencies as their societies undergo restructuring. One of the most alarming criminal activities has been the attack on farmers since 1994.
