Abstract

Warr (1990:894) considered the presence of other persons in the immediate environment to be a ""... critical variable in determining individuals' sense of safety"". Being alone is said to provoke fear because an isolated individual is seen as an easy target for victimisation; and individuals believe that if there are other people in the vicinity, they will come to a person's aid in the event of an attack.
