Contrary to what many people think, prisoners do not shed all their rights at the prison gate. A prisoner is supposed to retain all the rights of a free citizen except those justifiably withdrawn by law, expressly or by implication, or those inconsistent with the legitimate penological objectives of the prison system ( 1979(1) SA 14(A): 40).
