Abstract

Most authors agree that worldwide the polygraph is one of the most controversial measuring instruments in the behavioural sciences (Gudjonsson 1992; Hess & Weiner 1999; Iacono & Lykken 1997; Ramsland 2001). This controversy is illustrated by the recent pronouncement by the Professional Board of Psychology in South Africa in the media that the polygraph is totally unreliable and that the use of the instrument is not in the best interests of the public.
