Bank robbery over the counter is a serious crime and is increasing worldwide annually. Bank robbery in the United States of America increased from 436 in 1960 to 6900 in 1980 (1,482,56%). There was an increase in the Netherlands from 140 cases in 1983 to 383 in 1987 (173,57%). In South Africa the number of bank robberies in the Police Division Witwatersrand which were investigated by the Brixton Murder and Robbery Unit rose from 18 in 1984 to 48 in 1989 (166,0%).
