Riots take place at times in connection with demonstrations, at times in connection with other occurrences. They must not be confused with demonstrations. A demonstration is a peaceful gathering to which the citizens of a constitutional democracy have a constitutional right; it is also a collective protest pointing to socio-cultural deficiencies, thus virtually preventing riots.
The Aids pandemic has generated a great deal of discussion and controversy regarding the impact on the prison system; the proper management (prevention and control) of HIV infection in prison; and the risk of transmission to fellow inmates, correctional staff (medical and line personnel and counsellors) and their families. The purpose of this article is to review and analyse the incidence of the disease in prison systems and some of the management strategies that have been developed to cope with the problem.
Personal safety and crime prevention should be the aim of each member of the community. The police on its own cannot prevent crime and secure household properties effectively without the residents' contribution. The public must take measures to prevent crime and protect themselves, their families and their homes from victimisation. It is essential to be aware of obvious criminal opportunities, one's own vulnerabilities and the precautions that can be taken to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
Abrams et at (1968:2153) contend that sociologists traditionally have investigated the social conditions which promote drug addiction in the individual. Psychologists, on the other hand, have focused on intrapsychic phenomena and personality in an attempt to come to grips with the causes of drug use.
