South Africa has the highest rape figures in the Western world (Labuschagne 1986:91). About 300 000 women are raped every year, averaging about 400 daily incidents of rape (Labuschagne 1986:91). On the other hand, the Central Statistical Service Report (1990/91:6 and 1991/92:6) indicates that in 1990/91, there were 9 057 prosecutions for rape and 4 661 convictions.
