The Netherlands is a rather small, densely populated country with a land area of about 35 000 square kilometres and about 15 million inhabitants Because the Netherlands had colonies in the East (Indonesia belonged to the Netherlands until the end of 1949) and in South America, the population in the Netherlands is rather pluriform because inhabitants of the former colonies were offered Dutch nationality if they did not want to stay in the former colonies after they became independent.
