Societies have always been confronted by individuals who were either unwilling or unable to conform to the requirements of the law. The connection between criminal behaviour and psychiatric illness has been of interest to human scientists, lawyers and medical practitioners alike. This interest has had two components: a desire to understand the nature of criminality, and the need to define the limits of criminal responsibility.
