While the press and politicians continue to be preoccupied with the tally of deaths attributable to sensational serial killers and explosive political conflict, concern has recently grown for a very different manifestation of violence. This is the everyday violence that occurs for the most part beyond the eye of the media: the stabbings, beatings, and shootings that daily leave some 60 South Africans dead and another 2 500 so severely injured that they require hospital care.
