oa CSIR Science Scope - Researchers continue to pursue road binders from renewable sources : sustainable future

Abstract

CSIR researchers have undertaken field tests using non-traditional stabilisers for unsurfaced roads in the Kruger National Park, an important South African conservation area. The results were monitored over a period of a year. In this context, soil stabilisers play an important role in reducing the loss of gravel from the roads over time, thereby reducing the amount of replacement gravel that needs to be extracted from the areas within the conservation area. It also contributes to a reduction in dust generated and thus damage to vegetation and animals.
