The Olifants River, one of the main river systems in South Africa, has often been described as one of the most polluted rivers in southern Africa, with Lake Loskop acting as a repository for most of the pollutants from the upper part of the catchment. In the upper Olifants River catchment, acid mine drainage, sewage pollution, and extensive agriculture are all sources of human impact on the river and lake.
