oa CSIR Science Scope - Remote sensing contributes to eutrohication monitoring programme : water : precious natural resource

Abstract

Information about the trophic status of dams is vital for managing freshwater resources in South Africa. In response to a request by the Hartbeespoort Dam water quality team, the CSIR Satellite Applications Centre has proposed a programme to monitor the trophic state of the most critical dams in the country through the satellite imagery it receives directly. This is in support of the National Eutrophication Monitoring Programme, which is funded by the Water Research Commission (WRC). It is primarily an initiative of the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs through its Directorate Resource Quality Services, which is responsible for water quality.
