Abstract

Researchers have discovered the uncanny ability of a species of blue-green freshwater algae to survive outside water for long periods. This ability to tolerate relatively rapid increases in UV flux could have particular significance in the light of reports that there is a high risk of species-level extinction resulting from climate changes by the year 2050.
