oa CSIR Science Scope - Science at work for cheaper anti-HIV drugs : HIV/AIDS

Abstract

ScienceScope reported in January 2009 that a new, economically competitive methodology for the preparation of an intermediate in the production of antiretrovirals AZT and stavudine has emerged from CSIR laboratories. It is hoped that this research outcome will in future help empower African governments to afford wider roll-out of ARV treatment programmes, as well as stimulating the local production of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
