oa CSIR Science Scope - Climate change in the Southern Ocean : implications for global CO emissions reduction plans and science : a changing planet - the ocean

Abstract

For many centuries the Southern Ocean, with its Roarin' 40s and Screaming 50s, has been a mythically remote part of our planet: pristine, freezing, foreboding; the domain of hardy adventurers and whale hunters. Today we know that it has been one of our most important assets as a regulator of regional climate and global atmospheric CO for at least the past million years.
