In a carefully balanced natural process which is influenced by light and iron, phytoplankton in the oceans absorbs atmospheric CO2 like a sponge through photosynthesis. Mankind needs to learn more about this process and its possible sensitivity to climate change and impact on global warming, which is why the recent establishment of a world-class 'clean lab' at the Stellenbosch University is welcomed by local environmental researchers.
