Abstract

suggests how the much-debated but still rather theoretical concept of the African Renaissance could be concretely applied in praxis. This is demonstrated with specific reference to the field of architecture or the built environment. The article suggests how contemporary professional architects can draw valuable lessons from the vernacular architecture of the African population of the past and the present. Aspects of African structures and traditional African concepts of ordering space can inform contemporary architectural design on different levels, including materials and technology, orientation and place-making, artistic decoration, form, and underlying principles. The research is largely based on interviews with architects and an analysis of actually built examples throughout South Africa.
