Sir Etienne de Villiers was undoubtedly one of the most brilliant and discerning jurists that South Africa ever produced, but also one of the most eccentric people who ever lived in Bloemfontein. In 1920 he was appointed judge-president of the Orange Free State and at the same time was standing in as appeal court judge, a post to which he was appointed permanently in 1933.
