Abstract

The purpose and value of the work of the folklorist is often questioned by academics from other discipines and today's society, which is to a great extent dominated by rapidly developing technology and industries. Three ballads were chosen to illustrate the topical importance of folksong as part of folklore for contemporary society. Each of them demonstrates different ways in which either academics or society in general can benefit from knowledge and understanding of the content of the ballad. Knowledge of traditional customs, way of life, words and expressions often contributes to a better insight into contemporary customs and problems.
