Abstract

Gladys het haar dagboek as agtienjarige jong meisie in haar ouerhuis in Kaapstad begin.

This is an introductory study of the cultural historical significance of the diary of Gladys Isabel Barry (née Van der Bijl) (1882-1954). The original diary is part of the Africana collection of the National Library in Cape Town. The diary consists of 53 note books covering the period from 1900 and 1952. She started the diary when she was eighteen years old, while living with her parents in Cape Town. The diary reflects extensively on the life of a woman in the first half of the twentieth century. Gladys was a woman, wife, loyal supporter of the community and an individualist.
