Abstract

The [place] "in the sun" Elangeni was home to the painter, J.H. Pierneef (1886-1957) from 1939 untill his death. It was here, in what is today the Pretorian suburb of Brummmeria, that he built his house and studio against the northern rock ridge and there laid out his garden. The property was sold on the death of his wife in 1969. The new owners, Wynand and Eleonor Smit, both architects, altered and added to the property in the same spirit. In 1975 they were responsible for it being proclaimed a National Monument in terms of the then National Monuments Act. In 2002 it was sold to two landscape architects who are busy reinstating the neglected garden.
The house itself was documented by in 1969, 1986 and again in 1996 by Wynand Smit. In 2002 the garden was documented by students in the landscape architecture programme of the University of Pretoria. Further to this there are descriptions of the house and the manner in which Pierneef lived in it.
In this article it is proposed that the house, and garden in particular, still gives lease to the vision of Pierneef, as well as those of its subsequent families that inhabited "The Kraal" as it was also known. An attempt is made to determine and interpret this vision.
