Abstract


Television as a cultural medium can be studied in two sections, namely as communication and as aesthetical medium. An important aspect of television as communication medium is the reflection of ideology through subtle or explicit cultural truths in dialogue or in songs, or through visual symbols that are usually culturally bounded. Ideology is conveyed on different levels and requires the use of cultural myths. In television, these existing cultural ideologies are not only upheld, but also often developed and even challenged. This article examines the different levels of ideological manifestation, the expression of specific ideologies and myths within the Afrikaans culture, and the way in which these ideologies were sometimes opposed or developed. The use of symbolism to express ideology is discussed through principles in the fields of semiotics and structuralism. The theoretical discussion will be illustrated with examples from specific Afrikaans children's programmes from 1976-1996, the year of the official launch of the South African television service to the year of the restructuring of the SABC. Ideologie vind op verskillende vlakke neerslag en behels die gebruik van kulturele mites. In televisie word bestaande kulturele ideologieë nie net oorgedra nie, maar voortdurend ontwikkel en selfs omvergewerp. Hierdie artikel beskou die verskillende vlakke van ideologie-neerslag, die oordra van spesifieke ideologieë en kultuurmites binne die Afrikaanse kultuur, en die wyse waarop hierdie ideologieë soms teengewerk of verder ontwikkel is. Die gebruik van simboliek om ideologie oor te dra, word deur middel van beginsels uit die semiotiek en strukturalisme bespreek.
