Abstract


Television as cultural medium can be studied in two sections, namely as communication and as aesthetic medium. Television as aesthetic cultural medium implies the artistic aspects used to produce the programmes, such as puppets and songs, as well as the culture that is portrayed in the programmes, like language and humor, the sets, and stories. These aspects will be discussed and illustrated with examples from Afrikaans children's programmes from the period between the official opening of the South African television service in 1976 and the SABC's restructuring in 1996. The genre that is discussed is locally produced Afrikaans children's programmes that used puppetry, with specific examples from and .

Televisie as estetiese kultuurmedium behels die kunssinnige aspekte wat gebruik word om programme te vervaardig, byvoorbeeld poppe en liedjies, asook die kultuur wat in die programme uitgebeeld word, soos taal en humor, stelle, en stories. Hierdie artikel behandel genoemde aspekte en lig dit telkens met voorbeelde uit spesifieke Afrikaanse kinderprogramme uit die tydperk 1976 tot 1996 toe, dit wil sê van die amptelike opening van die Suid-Afrikaanse televisiediens tot met die herstrukturering van die SAUK (nou die SABC).
