Television as cultural medium can be studied in two sections, namely as communication and as aesthetic medium. Television as aesthetic cultural medium implies the artistic aspects used to produce the programmes, such as puppets and songs, as well as the culture that is portrayed in the programmes, like language and humor, the sets, and stories. These aspects will be discussed and illustrated with examples from Afrikaans children's programmes from the period between the official opening of the South African television service in 1976 and the SABC's restructuring in 1996. The genre that is discussed is locally produced Afrikaans children's programmes that used puppetry, with specific examples from and .
