Abstract

Firstly, information about the Waldeck Battalion and its transfer to the Cape, as well as its musicians and the instruments being used by them, is supplied. Furthermore, the musical life at the Court of Waldeck in Arolsen, Germany, where these musicians came from, was investigated.
Several conclusions about their musical heritage in Germany, as well as their performance at the Cape, have been made. The Halbmondbläser, for example, who had been mentioned by the German author Lichtenstein in his travel descriptions of Africa, appeared to be one of the musicians of the Waldeck Battalion. Furthermore, some of the Waldeck-Hautboisten were well trained musicians who also played a part in the court's musical life. They were accordingly in a good position to exert a positive influence on the musical life at the Cape at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
