Abstract

In this article the way in which photographic images can be used in historical research, especially in areas where there is a paucity of sources, is examined. As an example the photographic collection of the University of Pretoria Archives is used to illustrate how photographs bring to light the changing position of female students at the university. Attention is also given to the factors that have to be considered and criteria that have to be applied when using photographic material in historical research, as is the case with the use of other alternative historical sources such as oral testimony.
